Phonics and Early Reading

Phonics is taught through the Little Wandle scheme details of which can be found the PHONICS SECTION of the website. Phonics is continued, where needed, into KS2, in the form of Little Wandle rapid catch up groups delivered daily.

Reading

Across school we have a range of opportunities for children to read and develop a love of reading. We have an extensive banded book scheme. This allows our children to be able to choose reading age appropriate books that they are encouraged to read daily at home.

Cracking Comprehension

We have a weekly reading lesson which focusses on developing comprehension skills. This is taught through the Cracking Comprehension scheme which introduces the children to a variety of texts across fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

We also teach reading skills through the use of vipers.

World Book Day

We have a well established world book day which allows the whole school to come together and celebrate a love of reading.

Library

We have an extensive library in school, with a part time librarian, which the children visit every week. Children can choose a book to take home and they have a wide choice across fiction and non-fiction. Children can be inspired by others reading choices through our online review system and our teacher recommendations.
